Comments:Bill,

Thanks for the correction. I've changed the caption on the Eric Fields Picture. I don't know when that pic was taken, but it sure doesn't seem like 8 months before the Davis fight. Time sure flies by, doesn't it?! Anyway, send my best to Eric "Danger" Fields! Thanks for dropping in to the museum.

Gary Raymond has not been Eric's manager since last year. The current manager is Whit Haydon. Picture was taken at least 8 months prior to the fight.

Comments:After Five Years, McCombs is Ready for Round Two
By: Dan Horgan
Perhaps the most overlooked variable in boxing today is the vital importance of luck in a fighter’s career. Pugilists who benefit from good luck often find themselves at the top of the sport, while those who don’t generally retire not having lived up to their full potential. If luck in boxing was a body of water, then twenty-five year old Richard McCombs would be an arid desert.

[More:]

Countless boxers attribute misfortune to inhibiting their careers. Everything from poor training to medical obscurities seem to come up when a fighter talks about a loss, but to know the true meaning of bad luck, one needs to know the story of Richard McCombs.

Growing up in Southeastern Washington D.C., McCombs, a self described “lost boy,” found solace in the fight game and began to excel at his craft. Training under Jerode Dews, McCombs compiled a 26-6 amateur record and even won a Washington D.C. Golden Gloves title at 139 pounds.

On January 23, 2001, he made his pro debut at middleweight, knocking out the inexperienced Martin Ward in less than a minute. But over the next year, the downward spiral began.

“My mother-in-law died six months after the Ward victory,” explained McCombs. “And right after that, I was offered a fight on one days notice. At the time, I was extra confident from my first fight, so I took it. I ended up paying the price.”

For McCombs, “paying the price” meant suffering a first round knockout loss to the undefeated Tony Jeter. And the back luck didn’t end there.

“In my next fight, I was outweighed by fifteen pounds,” said McCombs. “I paid the price a second time.”

McCombs was again KO’d in the first round, this time at the hands of the untested Marvin Robinson. It was a tough time for the man they call “Too Sharp,” but McCombs was determined to again make things right.

“At that point in my career, I promised myself to never come into a fight unprepared again,” he told DogHouseBoxing.

But he never got the chance to. McCombs, who had signed a five year contract with Cleveland Burgess, a local manager, found himself in a catch-22 when Burgess fled to Mexico after “screwing over some fighters.” Although McCombs could fight while Burgess was gone, he would “need to pay Burgess a lot of money.” So McCombs, anxious to get back into the ring, has had to wait -- for five years and counting.

“It’s been frustrating,” said McCombs. “I’ve just been staying in the gym, staying in shape, and getting ready for when the time comes.”

McCombs first fight back will be in May versus an opponent to be named. Because his contract with Burgess is up, he can fight without losing money.

Although the five year layoff appears to be an issue of concern, McCombs is not worried about ring rust. In his time off, he has lived a disciplined life, dedicating nearly all of his time to his family and Jesus Christ. In addition, he has been keeping his skills sharp by sparring with former two time middleweight champion William Joppy. According to McCombs, the experience has been invaluable.

“I’ve learned a lot sparring with Joppy,” said McCombs. “And I‘ve been holding my own in there. Remember, I‘m a former champion myself.”

McCombs will embark on the second round of his career in May. His unnamed opponent will be facing a determined, strong, fresh McCombs who has been waiting to fight for over five years. Needless to say, that opponent is, well, pretty unlucky

A Benjamin Chavez, of Lordsburg NM is in the Lordsburg NM newspapers for boxing.
I haven't heard anything on him, for about 6 months, or less. Whatta, whatta-a-ah, wha-wha-wha where . . ., O-o-o-o-oh.
The famous Julio Cesar Chavez, presently, has a son named so, as the internet Houston Press announced,
January, Friday 19th 2007, that is boxing, also.
I have to dig up the papers at the library, and see if anyone has heard anything! It would be nice to hear something,
about such exciting events, so well publicized. Mr. Benjamin Chavez won a title, and, soon enough, defending was
quite a high-light, for sponsoring with Tejano Fiesta of Lordsburg NM.

But, they went out at Cruces, 2nd Place 2nd Round TKO. And, but, yeah, I, still, can't forget those days. My days! Like Animas Panthers mid-'80s five (5) and early-'90s two (2) Varsity AA High School National Championships. Those two, kiko & millon, kiko made National Boxing Gloves Champion '65, all those silver ribbon medals, and then the ONE GOLD MEDAL AS BIG AS HIS FIST AND THICK AS 4 SILVER DOLLARS. So, but, and, yeah, I still think of My Days, SKYHIGH, and all those Leer cruises to all the Americas and Australia. Out A Site. I think I'll have a cigar, yeah.

Comments:Just to let you know, Kenneth Vice won a Welterweight (140 lbs.) WBF title on January 25, 1995 in Bristol, Tennessee against Alvin Patton. He is listed as a Jr. Welterweight Contender on this site. Although 135 lbs. was the weight he preferred to fight at, he could only get a title fight at 140 lbs. towards the end of his career. He only had 4 weeks to train for it, and the gym in our backyard was falling apart at the time. As a matter of fact, we didn't even have a clock in the gym. I helped time the rounds he sparred on the heavy bag with a stop watch and used nails to mark them. He hadn't fought in years. (As always he was the underdog.) He fought all 8 rounds on pure heart because he ran out of gas in the 1st round. My brothers and sisters and I were unable to watch the fight because it was on satellite, but a friend kept us posted by telephone. My mother was folding clothes and we were huddled in the kitched when we got the news that he had finally won a title fight. Needless to say we have never been prouder of our father. Not bad for a coonass from Youngsville.

If my mother didn't have a say so (and he didn't have 6 children to worry about), he would still be fighting today, at the age of 43. These men work very hard to excel in this brutal sport, and it is always appreciated when their hard work is recognized.

He fought Joe Lewis in Madison Square during a Golden Gloves event. He hung 'round with Buddy Bear, (Max Bear), the dad of Jethro Bodine from the Beverly Hill Billies show. He told me a lot of really great stuff about the carnivals, the sideshows he worked and of course, a lot of boxing stories. I believe them all! Joe Vreeland
