Across the street was a park where the older gentlemen went for lawn bowling. I used to walk up the hill at the corner to a local sweet shop with my mom. That is also where i got my Scottish alley cat from. I have not been up that way in some years, but would like to visit at some time and show my sons where i used to live as a child. |

| Comments: | Hi Christa,
I have enjoyed browsing your site over the past few years. I was born in, and still live in, Montrose - and my parents made many lovely friends at the base, especially during the 60's and 70's. My Dad is Syd Walker, a local landscape artist who painted many views of the surrounding area, including many of Montrose, Edzell and the Glens. I remember when my sister Fiona and I were little girls, my parents had a long term pitch for our caravan on Edell Muir, and then we moved it to an area near the back of the Post Office, beside the steps which lead down to the Shakkin' Brig. We went to the caravan every weekend, and all during summer we moved into the caravan and spent the entire holidays in Edzell, whilst Dad drove into Montrose every day to work. I remember Bonnie and Gerry (I think their surname was Scheider); Alison Martin (Beep); a girl whose name was Shondelle; Jim Kirby, and others whose names I can't recall, but my parents still speak about them fondly! There were two brothers in my infant class (I think they must have been twins) and one of them was called Roland - I remember asking my Mum how they could get to America and back at dinner time! I actually thought (as a very young child) that Edzell base WAS America! We were there so often, but everything was SO American - the food, the bowling alley, the cinema, even the chocolate vending machines, which had American chocolate, and took cents instead of pennies. I loved the big annual picnics - they were a highlight of my summer, and I couldn't wait for them to come round. They were amazing, with the enormous hangers filled with barbeques, and all the games! It was at the base I was introduuced to Root Beer, which I still love - although I have to wait until we have a family holiday in the USA before I can enjoy it! I also recall playing an American version of Monopoly at Beep's house. In the late 70's, early 80's, my sister and I had passes for the EM Club, and we went up there every weekend for the discos and the live bands. We made more friends at that time, and we were made to feel so welcome every time we went there. I still occasionally see Fred, who took our orders for 'Cheeseburger with everything' or my (then) boyfriend's order for 'Big Davie' - the food was always good! Edzell is still a favourite place for our family, and we often go there. We were there last Sunday, as it happens. It still looks the same, and the Shakkin' Brig is still there, with its little pebbly beach on both sides, a favourite place for skimming stones. When I was 40 (9 years ago) my sister (who is a writer) wrote me a special birthday poem, and the last 6 lines go like this: "If I could give you one birthday wish it would be an Edzell summer; stones to skim, red sandstone clinging to our legs, ripe berries. - Instead, I'll say the Shakkin' Brig and we're already there." Christa - Thank you for your website; for giving those people who were lucky enough to live there, and who were touched by the magic of Edzell, a place where they can feel a little bit closer - and to give those of us who live nearby, and visit it regularly, the opportunity to appreciate what a magical place it is. Kind regards, Kirsten |

| Comments: | Hi all, Amy and I were stationed at Edzell from Feb 1995 to Oct 1996. I was beginning to think we were crazy for still feeling homesick when we hear the pipes, or hell, even hearing the accent will sometimes make me wish back to those day--but now I see we are not alone! There was something so perfect about our time together there. I was there at the AF Detachment--but got to know many of my Navy brothers and sisters at the C/O Club, and on the Tug of War Team. We got our butts kicked every weekend--but something I wouldn't trade for anything.
We met the greatest man I think I'll ever know in Edzell--his name was Duncan, MacGregor--Mac. We lived at a place called Townhead of Balmakelly--owned by Stuart and Aileen Donald--just a few miles north on the motorway then east toward Marykirk. "Mac" was the sheperd that came with the house Aileen always said. Her father put in his will that Mac could always use a bit of the land for his few sheep--and Aileen was a wonderful woman herself--I would love to visit her again someday. Mac didn't say much to me until he saw I had a parachute badge on my uniform, and he opened up after that. We became very close friends. Mac told me he was one of the original SBS (later SAS) members during WWII. Mac died in 1997 or 1998--about a year after his beautiful bride, Elizabeth. His daughter called to let us know in the middle of the night when we were stationed in Germany. I think of them several times a month, and I know my wife does too. Mac loved Oreos, and he loved feeding them to my dog--Dempsey. Whenever I get a couple good single malts in me I like to think of them together now--Mac feeding him 2 cookies for every one he eats himself! Anyway, thanks for the site--it makes me feel better knowing that there must have been something in the water that makes us all this crazy about the place. For the life of me I can't remember our babysitter but he rode a harley...lol. | Comments: | My dad was the XO stationed in Edzell from 1989-91. We lived on base - Quarters "F" on Denstrath. I went to ASA and my brother (Joe) and sister (Mary) went to Halsey. My mom, Martha Daly taught at Halsey. It is great to see a site like this and have a chance to remember Edzell... the bus ride to school, the blue door, the bowling alley, the gym...I remember my summer hire jobs (at the commissary and at the clinic). It was a strange place to grow up as a teenager but we had a great deal of fun --- or at least tried to. I found this because we were talking about Edzell tonight at dinner with my parents - trying to remember something about Inverbervie. I wish Mr. Hay could still bring me milk every day! I saw Natasha Jarmon's pictures of the base in 2005 - it looked pretty run down. It's a shame - since we all have such fond memories. |

| Comments: | I'm a former U.S. Navy Communications Technician and towards the end of my duty at Skaggs Island, CA I recieved orders to report to Edzell Scotland. I was dumbstruck as the choicest duty one could get in the U.S. was Skaggs and, the choicest duty one could get overseas was EdZell. I was extatic but after 14 days, someone in BUPERS realized the mistake and I was reassigned to Reykeyavik (Keflavik) Iceland. Those orders stood until I was packing to leave Skaggs and I was given another change to Adak Alaska.
I'd still love to visit there as I am a decendant of folks from Paisley. My mother visitede there many years ago and her current neighbors were there last week. You are very fortunate to have lived there... it sounds like a real paradise. I'd love to make it there somedsay. Tom |

Great to see your pics, other peoples comments, worked on the base from 14yrs old as a babysitter to many a family - the main ones being an Adrienne and Gino brown. Did this until 97 when I had my own wee one. Good to hear from anyone that remembers me. However my main reason for posting this is to try and get in touch with two old friends we have lost touch with. First is Deena Faults/Fawlkes (not sure of spelling) she was stationed in Edzell when I was little (so about 15-20 years ago) and was a good friend of my mums and I know she'd like to get back in touch. Also I'd like to get in touch with an old pen pal of mine that rented a cottage on my parents farm. His name was Adam Nicholl and he was an academic/writer not sure what he did on the base, but would love to get back in touch with him. Bye Tracy |

I worked temporarily at the E-Club as a bartender. Had some pretty interesting patrons! I do remember a couple of Royal Navy single dudes who use to sit up at the bar along with a gal who use to drink I believe, White Russians! It was a great time there...escpecially when the SeeBees came in got drunk and knocked down the glitter ball above the dance floor! Their punishment was to paint the inside of the club! We always wanted to go back but could never get anothe tour! Bummer! The trips on the train to go shopping in Dundee and Aberdeen, the trip to Edinburgh Zoo and the famous Dalhouise (sp?) Banquet for Valentine's was a treat! And yes, the little town of Montrose! Even the Navy Day Ball trips was so memorable! |

| Comments: | Christa - Thanks very much for putting this together. I was in Edzell from 1973 to 1976, and a teenager at the time. My father was the base dentist. Dr. Thomas Allensworth.
Looks like we overlapped, but I'm sorry to say that I don't remember you. Lots of water under the bridge since then. Like you, I have fond memories of the place. I played in a band we called the Bitter's End the last couple of years there. Most of the players were Scottish. We were not very good, but had a couple of gigs before we busted up. We played at the YAC one time. I played the piano and sang. My main song was "American Pie" by Don Mclean. I remember spending many a night at the YAC, and alot of time at the bowling alley. One more memory - There were huge hangers on the far side of the base with recycled paper in enormous blocks piled 5 or more high. It was like a 3D maze. We'd go there and play for hours among all the twisty passages and small rooms the big paper blocks made. Right before I left the hangers burned down with all the paper. What a shame. They burned for days as I recall. I'll try to find a picture or two from the era.... -Wally |

| Comments: | I was in Edzell in the early '60s, mid '70s, and early '80s! Absolutely the best place on the planet. We move there in '63 (I think) -- arriving on New Year's Day. They were kicking the sheep out of the base housing so we could move in. We lived in the junior officer duplex house at the corner of the road that ran in front of the base and the road that divided the housing area from the base itself. I went to Luthermuir school. The headmaster was Mr. Watson -- man was he mean! My best friends were Al Otto (next door) and George McGonagal (he was the Chaplain's son). We had lots of fun and got into lots of trouble. I was back there in Feb 74 - July 75 as an enlisted sailor. Still have great memories of those times. Spent some time in London visiting friends at CINCUSNAVEUR. Came back from Jan 80 to Dec 82 with my wife. Our second son was born at Ninewell Hospital in Dundee. I made CTOC there. Man was that an initiation! 60 Chiefs and only 7 of us selectees. I love Scotland and hope to make a trip back some day. Anyone who remembers me can shoot me an email. Clyde

Base houseing in Inverbervie, finally, when Stephen turned about 2 months old and we were sure he would freeze to death if we didn't get it! I was so young when we got there (17). What a shock it was to not have a furnace! Hauling coal, washing dishes while the wind blew and the vinyl on the floor ruffled from it! Labor and delivery in a foreign country, boy did they deliver kids different than the states! Then they held you captive for a whole week to make sure you knew what you were doing! All I wanted was to go home to the states the whole time I was there. Now, 21 years later, all I want is to go back to Scotland. I too would love to move there permanently! I can't even find out how to apply. Oh, what I would do if I could go back to those three years! I would have seen and done so much more! If anyone remembers Steve and I, forgive me, I was young! LOL! Drop me an email if you care to re-live some of those times! Billie |

| Comments: | Hi everyone. I was stationed at RAF Edzell from Sept.'67 to Nov.'68, "O" Branch. Left there as a CTO3, made CTO2 before discharge in '71. Great memories to this day. Best duty I ever had. Went back in 1981 with my wife. Couldn't get on the base, but we spent 17 terrific days driving around Scotland and England What a trip! Back in '67-'68, I played guitar with Mike Rauen ("R" Branch). We played on base and at the Corner House pub. I'm still playing, but on keyboards these days. I want to wish everyone a great holiday season, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year.

Can anyone help! I have just put an offer in on a house in Edzell. The address is 138 Denstrath View, Edzell Woods. As you will know this is one of the houses on the old military base. I am waiting to hear if my offer has been excepted. Fingers crossed it will be. Anyway, my question to anyone is does anyone know anything about the history of the house or the area that they can share with me. I loved the house the first time I saw it and will keep you up to date regarding my offer. Thank you in advance for any info Take care |

| Comments: | This was lovely to look through. I too have to say I am one that would adore going back to Scotland. We (husband) and I meet at Edzell. He was a CTT and I a CTO so we knew more about crummy watch schedules than would have liked, but we got to see some wonderful places.. Then, we got to go back and close down the base whilst also having our second son. It was such a emotional time for me. Lovely friends and I miss it all sooo much.

I reflect often about my time there and I would love to visit again someday. If you were stationed there at the same time, you just might remember me! I'm the redhead who worked in the convenience store/deli on base. (I became the manager of the deli/snack bar when it separated from the convenience store). If you remember me, or just want to discuss the beauty of the 8th world wonder (aka SCOTLAND!!!!) then drop me a line. God bless all of you! |

Loved it, truly miss it as well and think about it often. At the time I was there, I was married and once I left Edzell, I was divorced a few years later. It goes to show you that the old legend is true - either marriage, divorce or car accident.............. Would love to hear from anyone that was in Edzell. Cheers, Mike Mc |

| Comments: | Hi! It was neat to see people remembering Edzell. I was a young (20yrs.old) Navy wife during my time in Edzell. I was there from Spring 1988-Spring of 1991. They said one of three things would happen when you got to Edzell... Get married (just did before I arrived there), Get in a car accident (yup, he had a DUI off base) or get divorced (Well, less than 3 months after leaving Edzell). So, my memories of Edzell are bittersweet. When my ex, Mike, lost his driver's license, we ended up in base housing. I was thrillled because I had been isolated out on a farm before that!! I think our street address was Halsey or Hulsey dr.
I am looking for my friend, Lissette Garcia. Lissette's husband was "Chico" and their daughter was Jennifer. \I lost touch when they moved to Japan and I changed addresses right after that. So, if anyone know's their current location. Please e-mail me. Thanks!! --Tina |

We lived across the street from the market and would go get the fresh milk before the store opened. (We paid for it later) I was the first of three students to attend the school in Edzell. My brother and I make a majority. We were a novelity to the Scotts. I rode a bike with no hand brakes (foot brakes) and had a play gun (another big no-no).
My dad retired from the Navy and we moved to San Diego. I move to Washingto state in 1986. I will alway be a navy brat - even now every two years I think we are we off to now. Count you self luck to see the real world. |

I too was a Navy Brat although my dad retired when I was six after moving from Bremerton to Edzell and then back to Bremerton. I returned in 2000 after graduating high school and saw many old friends. Many of the families we were stationed with over there are still our best friends. My family still has contact with many of the Officers stationed there from 1983-1987. If anyone has any interest in reconnecting I would be happy to help.
Again, great site. Matthew Froman p.s. If anyone knew my father Dr. Froman (he was on Lt. Commander or Commander while stationed in Scotland) who was one of the base family practice doctors please contact me. He died shortly after we returned from Scotland and I am trying to gather information on his life. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You |

Our Son Jake now goes to Luthermuir.
The Scottish/American days used to be great fun. My dad was called John Andrew and worked in the Galley on the base for many years. He was the one who used to buy all your old cars when you left the base!! We now live at 22 Denstrath Road. It is a beautiful estate and in the summer it is lovely. Halsey school is a bit run down now but the Ship's Inn is almost ready for opening. My best friend at school (and still is ) is Ann Henderson who lived across the road at Arnhall Farm. There was also the clachers, the whitecross family, the McDonald family and the Burns family. I have loads of cuttings on the run up to the sale of the houses. Enjoyed hillwalking with a group from Laurencekirk and camping all over in our green VW pop-up camper. When I think of Scotland I always remember the bright yellow fields of flax along the twisting coast road between Montrose and Aberdeen. It was a great place to ride a motorcycle. My favorite local event was the parade of fireballs they would roll and carry through the streets on New Years Eve and of course "First footing".

I was a Navy brat and attended Halsey for my 4th, 5th, and 6th grade years. My mother is Monica Moore who worked at the YAC in child develpment. My dad was the doctor on base while we were there. I remember many names such as Chris Pardun, whose mother worked at Halsey as an aid. Anyways I don't want to ramble on for too long, and I know this site is devoted mostly to the earlier Edzell generations, but I'm looking for old friends and anybody who remembers me or my family...or even anybody who doesn't know me who wants to talk...E-MAIL ME IF YOU KNOW ME or if you want to talk. I think often of Mr. Hay delivering milk, my two Yorkies, Kelby and Lucy (long gone now), but they were lovable dogs. My two son's Michael and Christofer had such great times there as well. Diane and I divorced about 3 years ago. I left the Navy with 13 years of active back in 1990 and finished up in the reserves, retiring a few years ago. Time goes by so fast. We had great friends which were our family away from home. I heard the base was for sale. Would like to know more of what happened to it and some of the people we were with. |

| Comments: | We were in Edzell from 84-86. It was a beautiful place, and I loved having milk, eggs, etc. delivered to our door. We lived in the row of housing right across from the base, can't remember the name of the street. I remember the times of bicycle riding around the country by the base, the fresh air and the bright fields of yellow daffodils and the wonderful dairies and fields full of dairy cattle. Also every Saturday when the Scottish band would come and play the bagpipes in the middle of the housing area, even today the bagpipes stir my soul, and transport me back in memory to those Saturdays at Edzell. I also got the priviledge to attend a Robbie Burns day celebration at a Scottish friends home in Edzell and that was very delicious, with the haggis(sp?)turnips, etc., and all of the cheerful, friendly people sitting around the long table. There was at that time also the most gifted clock repairman in Brechin. I wish we had him here in the states. I remember my friends Fred and Maria who were my caring friends next door, and Sue Blankenship, and Hazel Gardner, and Tony and Carol Zimmerman. Gosh would sure like to see you all again or hear from you. My husband was a CTM stationed at RAF Edzell named Robert. Unfortunately, we divorced in the 1980's. We had 3 children Traci, Timothy, and Paul(born in Dundee 4/29/86). Many precious memories along with the tough ones too! Would love to visit Scotland again. The Canehills, Bagleys, and Pioskis moved in shortly after on the same street. We had the 2nd house across from the large field. I noticed Steve Orman signed your book and he and I must have been on the same baseball team which was managed by Chaplain McGonnigal [sp?] - the name sounds vaguely familiar. I actually ran into the Chaplain when I was in Viet Nam back in 1969 - what a surprise. I went to Luthermuir and Laurencekirk - the Headmaster was Mr. Watson at Luthermuir. My brother and I were den chiefs for the cub scouts. I use to deliver fresh eggs to folks at the base - I picked them up at the chicken farm down the road on my bike and delivered fresh to the door for a whopping 3d per dozen. My siblings, Jimmy and Paula babysat, mowed grass, delivered newspapers and made fudge for sale - being some of the only teenagers at the time, we were in high demand. I played my first golf at the Edzell golf course and actually found a score card in my father's golf bag when we were cleaning up the garage. Edzell was definitely one of my favorite places and I would love to hear from folks who knew my family including the Canehills, Bernadette Simons, Lisa Lehman. I just recently was contacted by the Pioski's. Thanks for sharing your website! |

| Comments: | Hi There,
I read with interest your article in the Laurencekirk Observer, dated 19 December 2003 and it brought back many memories for me at my time at Mearns Academy which was known as Laurencekirk Secondary School when I attended back in the early 1970's. I also share the same feelings that you have about Donald Bruce, the former English teacher. He was also a very strong and positive influence and I can honestly say one of the most caring and supportive teachers that I have ever had. I always enjoyed writing and his encouragement stays with me today as I continue to write poetry. Although I was not based at the RAF Edzell base I had much in common with some of my friends from there. I was a Canadian also suffering a culture shock whilst attending the local school and getting used to coal fires! My parents had taken over one of the local businesses from my father's uncle, Tom Florence. Although the sign above the door read Florence's it was often referred to as "Auld Tammies". You may remember it as one of the places to have a fast hot lunch or to load up on your "crisps" or "sweeties". It is with bittersweet memories that I recall our time in Laurencekirk as my father, local grocer, James Florence, sadly passed away in 1975. I fondly remember the Martin Family who were based at RAF Edzell in the early 1970's. I was friends with "Deanie" her real name being Theresa and her sister Barbara. I recall she also had a brother John, and I think there was another younger brother? Deanie and I felt that we had much in common with both of us originally hailing from North America. We shared many secrets and dated our "first" boyfriends at Laurencekirk Secondary School. If anyone knows her whereabouts, I would love to hear from her revisit some old memeories. I would enjoy communicating with anyone that was in the area from 1971 to 1978. I returned to Canada in March 1978 with my husband, William Rothney, who was one of the local "Lournie" boys. We reside in Oshawa, Ontario with our two children, Steve (23) and Isla (20). Our family carries on the Scottish tradition here as we own a Scottish/Celtic Gift store which boasts a large selection of fine quality celtic sterling silver jewellery. My daughter also teaches Highland Dancing in Oshawa! We have returned to Laurencekirk several times since the 1970's as we have family still in the area. |

| Comments: | Hi, my name is Yvette (Alexander) Engard. My dad was stationed at Edzell from ' 76 to about ' 80. I left in Nov. ' 79 to join the navy. I went to Montrose Academy in the ' 76-' 77 school year that's when we lived in a local farm house about100 years old so it wasn't really that old, moved over to base housing in Brchin and graduated from London Central High School, High Wycombe, England in 1978. I worked at the YAC Center for the summer and Started working at the EM club when it got cold. I remember having a great time before leaving Scotlsnd to go to bootcamp the month of Nov ' 79. I was medically retired due to an accident in ' 81 and am divorced now with 3 kids my oldest will be 20 in Sept. and he is in the Army, planning to marry in Aug. , next is my 15 year old son (16 in may) who's in high school in the band and into skateboarding and last but not least is my daughter who will be 10 in Sept. She's into girl scouts, basketball and dance right now. I'd like to hear from anyone that was in Edzell or went to High Wycombe during that time as well as sharing memories of Scotland with others that might want to chat about their time there. I miss the friends I made on base as well as off base. Remeber the "Davie" they used to make at the EM club. I remember eating the fish and chips off base and those Bidies, boy were they good. I even remember "Tatie picking (picking up potatoes) and picking strawberries and rasberries and getting paid by the pint for the berries. Anyone who'd like to write back email me at;

I lived in Scotland from 75-78 too. I have pictures of you at school in Lawercekirk with friends. You may remember my brother, David Fairburn. He had a crush on you. He lives here in Maryland with his wife and 5 adopted kids. I have 4 children of my own. Those were some of the best years of my childhood. I want to go back so bad. My father and I were planning a trip back there when he suddenly died at the age of 49. To anyone who remembers me, please e-mail me. I would love to hear from anyone. Patti |

| Comments: | It's great to see that people have fond memories of Edzell. I went to Halsey Elementary from 2nd - 5th grade during the early 80's. I had Ms. Schneider and other wonderful teachers. I remember having the hula hoop contests and having to play dodge ball and hockey in the small gym. Also doing the Star Gazing club. I ran into Heather Cordell (she's now married) and last I heard was living in Bremerton, WA. So I'm looking for Jennifer Johnson, Jerry, Teberaruz, Jason, Maggie Kleindenz and others that were in my class! |

Started serching the web on Edzell and found this site. My dad was a CT 1st Class. He mad chief while we were there. I have old pictures of the initiation ceremony. We started a Cub Scout Pack in 1961 or '62. More old photos of a trip to Dunotar Castle. We had just enough boys to start a baseball team in 1962 and went to Holy Loch to play our only real game. Can't remember who won. We lived at 23 Denstrath Road in the old RAF housing. Judging from the other posts I've read, the base changed and grew alot after we left. There was no Halsey, we all went to Luthmuir in Edzell. I ate my first grown up restaurant meal in the Panmure Hotel dining room for my ninth birthday. So many fantastic memories. |

I was in Dunoon in March 1992 when the Navy pulled out. It was a very sad day and was probably echoed in the area of the Edzell base as well. I was told years ago that there was another small Navy base up in the tip of Scotland. Do you have any knowledge of it? |

Spitfire car in the background by the Marine barracks. I was stationed there as a Marine from Jan. 1978 to March of 1983. To live as a child in Scotland must have been an adventure. Especially trying to spell in school. All those words spelled differently than our english. Thank you for the memories. Pete. |

| Comments: | I was at Edzell as a radiotelegrapher in the U.S.M.C. from 1983-1985. We worked the "2 days, 2 mids, 2 eves, 80 hours off" and I was so busy and tired I didn't get to know the locals too well or see so much of what was and probably still is a beautiful place. (For the Marines there, the "80 hours off" were usually filled with inspections, etc.)
You civilians and dependents had it a bit better, especially the "children" who went to Scottish schools. You could more fully enjoy the experience as a watch-standing serviceman couldn't. I find it hard to believe that the entire base was disassembled. I understand they took every single brick out of the site, and now you can't even tell there was a huge circular antenna there. I still remember the last time I walked out of the ops building. It was after my last eve-watch, about 11:00 PM on a pitch-dark night with the wind howling through the myriad of wire that made up that excellent circular antenna array. It was spooky! It's been almost 20 years since I've been there. Good grief! Not only has time passed, we are living in a different world now. I am sure the Marine Corps no longer trains it's members in radiotelegraphy. Edzell technology is obsolete, but was so very important at the time. I understand that the old RAF Base is now some sort of resort area. I used to say "Man, I'm getting old!" Now I AM old! I look back on my time at Edzell as a good time, though. I'd go back for a visit if I could. |

I was a teacher at luthermuir primary from 1981 and many Americans from RAF Edzell were there at that time. I still clearly remember the slow close down of the base and the last few Americans to finally leave the local primary school. I have very fond memories of those days. The mix of Americans and all the local pupils made for some very interesting and at times challenging experiences! none of which I would change. It would be great to hear from any ex pupils. I still have regular contact with the other teachers who also worked at Luthermuir at the time. |

| Comments: | I was a CTT3 at Edzell from 1972-1973.Lived off base in Friockheim, about 18 miles from base. Started in the TEBO area but went to wideband section with Dave Lipsius as my supervisor. I went back in 1989 and got to see the base via the guard car and when it closed I got a copy of the Aberdeen paper sent to me. I cried. After reading the paper telling about how the Scots enjoyed the Americans I sent an email to the paper telling about my love of the Scots and of Scotland. I had no idea that they ended up putting in on the front page of one of the sections of the paper. I found this out when I got a package from a gentleman from Aberdeen containg the newspaper article and some info on the New Edzell. He told me he was so moved by the words of my love for Edzell and Scotland that he had to write me. Got a call a few months later from an American that had the article sent to him from a Scotish friend. Thanks for putting this on the web..Guess where my ashes go when I die....... |

Just did a search on RAF Edzell and found your site.... I worked at the base as a CPO in the Royal Navy.... and was the last ever watch leader out there... very sad.. but fantastic times. I have just managed to get a job with Aberdeenshire Councils' I.T. Support department and will be supporting all of south aberdeenshire schools IT Kit. I will be working in Mearns Academy next week - 28 July 03 - for a few days and will no doubt be treading in the footsteps of many of the RAF Edzell "Brats" that went to that place for their Secondary Schooling... it is a SMALL world. Back to School for me ! Take care Y'all. |

It's hard to describe the flood of memories that are rushing through my mind while reading some of the comments. RAF Edzell was an absolute wonderful experience with which I draw from today whenever a smile or two is needed. I miss those times dearly. Many friendships were established, although most all are dormant today. Clark Learch, Skip Hopkins, Darryl Grimes, Jake, and many, many more. Many whose faces I can see, but their names elude me. It is the place where I developed my taste for Scotch, learned the fine art of throwing darts, and fell in love with the wonderful country and people and of course Teresa Andros and a few other ladies, both American and Scottish. God bless all who hold RAF Edzell in their hearts. |

I have been in touch with Overseas Brats and they are hosting an all overseas school/community reunion in July 2004. I believe the rates are reasonable and since the planning is being done for us this would be a great opportunity for all of us to get together. Contact friends in your time frame and see if they are interested. We all have something in common, but a reunion is better when the people you want to see the most are in attendance. The details are on Overseasbrats.com. Email me at the above address if you are interested. |

Great site. Keep up the good work. My Dad was stationed at Edzell three times - the first from 1967-1969, where he met and married my Mom. My brother, Rick, and I accompanied them back twice (1977-1980 and again in 1983-1986). We lived on base for the 77-80 tour (where I attended Halsey) and in Brechin for the 83-86 tour (where I attended Halsey for 8th grade then Brechin High for my 3rd and 4th years). Scotland has a soft place in my heart - always has and always will. Being there with my family truly was the best time of my life - and I miss it. I do return for several weeks every other year and have brought my husband and two daughters with me. I keep in contact with several of my school mates from Brechin High and they have kept me informed of the goings on with the base and surrounding areas. If you remember me -= please drop me a line. |

| Comments: | The memories came on strong while browsing your site. My current commanding officer, John Mackin, and I started to recount our stories as he reported to Edzell as I left.
I am always curious why CT's (and apparently their children) feel so strongly about Edzell. You'll never hear them discuss any other duty station with such emphasis. I think it's because it was like a huge family, it was beyond fun, and the people were so fantastic. Not too mention the swans and the parties at Loch Wee. I still recall the first time it felt like a huge family was at the July 4th bash of 86. What a great time. I have since done a tour in London for three years and that brought back many memories. I followed that by precommissioning the USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (DDG 81) |
